Joel Simon - Flickerpix

Joel Simon, creative director at Flickerpix from Belgium, was invited to Belfast Metropolitan College last week to discuss his success in the industry to the media classes (Game development, Interactive Media and Film). It was a good opportunity for us as students to hear from someone who is in the industry and who has had success.

We had recently watched one of Joel's films, Macropolis. The short film is about two broken toys who have been rejected from production. They come to life and try to find the delivery van in order to find their friends. It is very creative and a fun film to watch. Also, it was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland and various landmarks can be seen, including the Europa Hotel.

Joel talked about having specialised skills in addition with intermediate skills and knowledge in other areas, mentioning he found a skill-set that followed that theory was more than likely the better way to approach the industry although stating it is obviously nice to be skilled in a lot of areas.

Macropolis won Best Animation at the 10th Annual Irish Film and Television Academy & Awards

Joel Simon's talk was very good and inspiring and hopefully we can hear from him again in the near future.
