Idea
The original concept was to shoot the video entirely from a
first person perspective to give the audience the feeling that it was them
doing the actions on screen. So with that in mind, we began filming on the day
scheduled and quickly realised that the first person perspective wasn’t going
to work. While the product may have been good in the end, it was too difficult
to maintain. We would’ve needed more equipment to help keep the camera stable
while on the move.
So we had to improvise on film day. We decided to go for a
more PES styled approach. We had previously watched many PES short films and we
had quite enjoyed the close homemade feeling that they gave off. PES uses a lot
of close up shots and we felt that close up shots were the second best option.
We then used this technique similarly to how we would have
used the first person perspective by showing the actions of the character while
keeping the character anonymous. The reason for the hidden identity was simply
because we didn’t want people thinking it was specifically for that person or
type of person. We wanted the audience to feel like that was their routine
before they watch television.
Working to a Brief
We began with a brief and then started to generate ideas
based on what was written in the brief.
For instance, we had to develop this video sequence with a certain age
group in mind, that age group was the 30-45 age range. The show would come on
at around 8.30pm-9.00pm so we made sure the title sequence was suitable.
The brief made it clear that the show aimed to be upbeat,
happy, cheerful and lively stating it was a ‘feel-good show’. Our soundtrack
really helps our title sequence become upbeat and lively. The song we used was
Tommy Sparks – She’s Got Me Dancing was actually chosen by me and the reason
for this choice was because the song is popular, cheerful and it actually went
very well with the motion in our video.
Seeing as the show wanted to use modern techniques such as
social media to get the people more involved and have a more interactive
product we aimed to get a modern feel across too. The way our location was
built and set up allowed us to give off that modern feel.
Pitch
My team and I gave a
pitch to our client after much brainstorming and ideas generation in the weeks
prior. I will now evaluate the pitch and the task overall.
I feel that the pitch went well, overall. We managed to get
our point across which is the key objective, I feel, of the pitch. We wanted
the client to actually understand our idea so we made a treatment and gave
information including;
- Location (Test shots) – We described our choice of location and why we decided to use it.
- Treatment – We supplied a summary of our idea so that the client could easily get a grasp of the concept then we’d add depth with the PowerPoint.
- Selling point – Our main selling point was the modern but homely feel our video has.
- Idea – We explained our idea, who came up with it and how.
The client liked our idea and supported us in our task to
complete the video sequence. After the pitch was given we started to plan out
our schedule. We chose which day we would actually shoot the video.
Feedback
We uploaded the video to YouTube and Vimeo. Carl, a member
of the group, added it to his deviantART profile and gained feedback through
there. The video was also critiqued on Outline, a design forum.
Evaluating
In my opinion, my contribution to the team was fair - I
supplied us with the location and myself and Carl also came up with the idea as
well as co-directed the piece. During the pitch, I contributed by talking about
the selling point which is the home feel it has as well as maintaining a modern
image.
I am generally unsatisfied with the our end product just
because I think it could have been executed a lot better and perhaps taken more
time to complete however, we couldn’t really take too much time. I feel that as
a group we set a high standard for ourselves and this, in my opinion, falls
short. On the other hand, it was our first attempt at this kind of animation
(stop motion) so perhaps the standard I set for myself should not have been so
high. I think after completing this project and given more time we could put
together a piece of stop motion animation of much higher quality.
I think also in some of the shots we took the lighting
differs too much from the shot prior and while that is a part of pixelation,
which is the technique we used, I still would’ve liked to have experimented
with lighting.
I am happy with the music and how it gives off the feeling
that we wanted. When were watching the video sequence without the music we realised just how much music impacts the
video and it was definitely a good idea to add music. Also, I like the design
of the logo/screen title as I think it reflects the tone that we want to show.
